“Corsai, Corsai, tooth and claw,
Shadow and bone will eat you raw.
Malchai, Malchai, sharp and sly,
Smile and bite and drink you dry.”
“Sunai, Sunai, eyes like coal,
Sing you a song and steal your soul.”
the above song…so creepy. but describes each class of Monster, of which August is the 3rd (sunai), eater of souls.
This book, i just loved the whole premise of a girl (Kate Harker) who wants to be ruthless like her father and the monster (August Flynn) who just wants to be good and more human.
I really couldn’t decide which of these two was my fave:
Kate freaking burns down a chapel in the first damn chapter
August fighting so damn hard against his hunger…he is so conflicted…
“And you?” asked Kate. “Your brother is righteous, your sister is scattered. What does that make you?”
When August answered, the word was small, almost too quiet to hear. “Lost.”
Yeah i think i loved them both!
The thing i reallyyy loved though, was the sound symbolism in this book. It is everywhere and one of the main symbols. Not surprising, since August uses his violin/music to bring souls to the surface.
“Everything about Emily Flynn was staccato. Everything about Henry was smooth. Leo’s steps were as steady as a pulse. Ilsa’s hair made the constant hush-hush of blankets.
And Kate? She sounded like painted nails tapping out a steady beat”
And that ending thoughhhhhhhhhhhh??? i’m eagerly away the next book!
so 5/5. highly recommend this one!!
so ya know just go…
